What are the emerging technology trends for which you are seeking engineers?
I would say that the trends which are emerging in the field of technology are Power Management, Performance SOCs along with Hi-Speed IOs and 28nm, 90nm and130nm technology. The engineers we seek to work with are along the same lines of technology.
What’s Sankalp’s policy vis-a-vis Internet access (including Social Networking sites) for its engineers?
We don’t have any restrictions on the usage of Internet as long as it’s on our network. Though, when we work on client networks for ODCs, we have to adhere to their rules and regulations regarding the same.
Do your employees have anything like stock options or its equivalent at Sankalp?
Stock options do exist at Sankalp, which itself was founded with a part aim of increasing the net worth of all of its employees. We have a very distributive equity model here which also ensures that no one person winds up with a large share of the equity.
Do you support the idea that IT firms take more care of their employees when compared to pure electronics firms like Sankalp?
I don’t want to comment on what IT firms do because I’m not personally aware of the situation but I will say this- From what I’ve heard about from other electronics firm’s HR personnel, the employees in electronics firms are very excited to be working on and with the latest that technology has to offer. Also,
as far as work conditions and amenities go, I can strongly say that we are at par (if not better) with the IT companies.
Does Sankalp have an internship program?
If yes, how do interested people get in contact with you? We do have an internship program. It’s more of an association with the campuses that we go to campus recruitment. It aims to familiarise them to the technologies that they will have to work on.
What measures have you introduced to reduce absenteeism/substance abuse? One reason we strive to hire freshers is because we can mould them to become professional employees. We make them undergo a rigorous training in which we integrate them to an ethical and fulfilling work culture.
What kind of training do you provide freshers?
Sankalp is actually pretty big on training. Every fresh engineer goes through a training period of 3 months, which includes a refresher course on the General Engineering Trends. We believe you cannot be a good engineer here if you don’t understand the overall SemiConductor Industry including the design flow processes. After the general induction, we look at their desires and skills and according to that, we provide specialised skills for the domain of their choice. A 4-6 week course is also assigned to them to focus on design, verification or layout based primarily on which project they will be working on.
Are there specific skill sets you look for while recruiting?
We look broadly at 3 areas:
- Attitude: We believe that at a certain level (education and skills remaining the same), attitude is the key differentiator of the aspirants.
- Technical Skill: Needless to say, this is the second most important skill that we look at.
- Adaptability: Once they come face-to-face with a problem, how will they react to it and find a way around is something that is a highly prized quality.
What are the key considerations you keep in mind while communicating HR policies to the company?
All of our HR policies are enabled only after a collaborative decision making meeting with the respective personnel. Be it advertisement placement or canteen policies, all the decisions are taken up with the employees’ knowledge and consent.
What are the major challenges facing HR Management today?
I would say that finding the right personnel who are fresh, talented and willing to learn is quite the challenge today when IT companies and Electronics companies are competing for the same brains.
What challenges do you face during recruitment drives?
While recruiting laterally, the main concern is judging the applicant's abilities. They all have impressive resumes but more than a few words on a paper, we have to use our judgement to make an informed decision. While recruiting engineering graduates, there are no huge challenges. We conduct placement drives across the country and it’s as smooth as it can get.
What does Sankalp do to deal with Stress Management issues?
I don’t think if you are familiar with your colleagues, then stress is a major issue. We have a very open office policy, which encourages everyone to interact with everyone else.
